Karen (Cox) MacklinMy family moved to Alaska, where I graduated from Dimond High School. The next 13 years I played, skied, owned & operated a hardware store in Girdwood, Alaska, and restored a 40-foot wood sailboat. My first marriage was not until I was almost thirty, with Ken dying of cancer shortly after we were married. Over the next few years, I completed my BEd in elementary education and my Masters in Special Education. I remarried during this time—26 adventurous years with Tom Macklin. We have two daughters and two grandchildren. This is my 20th year in education, having worked preschool through college. I am currently the Special Education Director for Sitka School District. My soul has strong ties to Alaska, and I cannot imagine living elsewhere. Other than a few years of trying to live in "the states"—once in the Southern California area and once in Lake Tahoe area—I have lived in Alaska. Tom and I moved from Girdwood to SE Alaska about 10 years ago and lived on our boat, only recently purchasing a house in Sitka.
