Karen (Cox) Macklin

My family moved to Alaska, where I graduated from Dimond High School. The next 13 years I played, skied, owned & operated a hardware store in Girdwood, Alaska, and restored a 40-foot wood sailboat. My first marriage was not until I was almost thirty, with Ken dying of cancer shortly after we were married. Over the next few years, I completed my BEd in elementary education and my Masters in Special Education. I remarried during this time—26 adventurous years with Tom Macklin. We have two daughters and two grandchildren. This is my 20th year in education, having worked preschool through college. I am currently the Special Education Director for Sitka School District.

My soul has strong ties to Alaska, and I cannot imagine living elsewhere. Other than a few years of trying to live in "the states"—once in the Southern California area and once in Lake Tahoe area—I have lived in Alaska. Tom and I moved from Girdwood to SE Alaska about 10 years ago and lived on our boat, only recently purchasing a house in Sitka.

We still have the boat and spend time during the summers cruising the area around Sitka. Kayaking is a newfound love of mine.

We had a great visit from Rocky and Diana (Harward) Reynolds last summer, and I had the pleasure of spending time with them a few months ago in San Diego. I did attend the 20th reunion as I was in the area at the time, but other than that, there have not too many other contacts with CHS alumni over the years. I would like to get in contact with Mary Broadbent if anyone knows of her whereabouts. It has been fun reading all the information about others on the website—thank you to those who worked on putting it together.
